Waterproofing and roof insulation

Every owner of a country house or cottage tries to minimize heating costs. One of the components of this process is the insulation of the roof of the house, regardless of its design – monolithic or wooden. Thanks to this operation, heat loss can be reduced by 15%. It all depends only on the materials used, the design of the roof, and the qualifications of the workers involved in insulation.

In this article, we will talk about how to insulate and waterproof a cold roof, talk in detail about the procedure for protecting a roof depending on its design, and also reveal some of the secrets of such work. So, let’s go.

How to insulate a roof?

Features of a pitched roof

As mentioned above, the procedure for insulating a roof may differ depending on the type of roof. Let’s first consider arranging a pitched structure made of metal tiles or slate, which is the most common.

For the waterproofing and insulation of the roof to be carried out by building codes, in addition to observing certain working conditions, it is necessary to take care of the materials. So, to carry out this procedure, you will need the following:

  • Insulation: mineral or glass wool is perfect as an insulating material. The latter is available both in the form of rolls and in the form of slabs. Experts recommend using slabs. This is because they do not deform. Foam plastic can also act as insulation;
  • Waterproofing material: the question of which roof waterproofing is best is quite relevant, but there is no clear answer. In this case, everything depends on the climatic characteristics of the area in which the house is located, the roof structure and the financial capabilities of the owner. Thus, roofing felt is the most common waterproofing material, which boasts strength and durability. However, recently, an option using a particular film has been gaining popularity, which protects the roof layers from moisture but allows it to evaporate;
  • Vapour barrier material: the best option is to use a special membrane. But roofing felt foil or glassine are also suitable.
  • Now that you know what materials you need for the job, let’s consider how to waterproof and insulate the roof. Let us remind you that now we will talk about pitched roofing.

So, this procedure involves performing the following actions:

  • Carrying out measurements. At this stage, the distance between the rafters is measured, as well as the thickness of the boards;
  • Cutting slabs of insulating material according to size. In this case, the width of the insulation boards should be one centimetre greater than the distance between the rafters;
  • Laying waterproofing on the roof so that it envelops the frame beams. After installing the waterproofing layer, its lower edges are bevelled to ensure water drainage;
  • laying the heat insulator. The slabs, pre-cut to the required size, are placed between the frame elements and lightly pressed down. If polystyrene foam is used as insulation, it is placed in the cells between the frame boards;
  • Fixing the insulation layer using lathing made of slats or thread, which is stretched on nails driven into the edges of the rafters;
  • Installation of vapour barrier. To fix the vapour barrier material, you can use a regular construction stapler;

Finish the roof’s interior using particle boards, plasterboard, or lining. In this case, it is imperative to ensure that there is a gap between the finishing material and the insulation.

Say goodbye to Sydney’s scorching summers and chilly winters. Home insulation in Sydney keeps your home comfortable all year round, like a cozy hug for your house.

Features of working with a flat roof

Unlike a pitched roof, insulating a flat roof involves performing work both from the outside and from the inside.

For external insulation, mineral wool or polystyrene foam is used. The first option is preferable since mineral wool has a low thermal conductivity, does not burn, and allows steam to pass through nicely. The sequence of actions for external insulation is as follows:

  • cleaning the roof surface from foreign objects, as well as levelling it;
  • laying a layer of vapour barrier material;
  • Installation of insulation boards, which are carried out using glue or mastic. In this case, it is imperative to seal the seams and joints;
  • laying a layer of waterproofing. Waterproofing a cold roof, in this case, also involves carefully filling the seams.

Insulating a flat roof from the inside is done as follows:

  • wooden planks are mounted to the ceiling, the distance between which must be at least 40 centimetres;
  • polystyrene foam slabs are fixed onto the slats using glue or mastic;
  • The final stage is interior decoration.
  • Proper waterproofing of the roof, its insulation, and a well-organized ventilation system will not only create a comfortable environment in the room but also help to significantly reduce the cost of heating the building. However, when carrying out such work, you should carefully monitor compliance with safety regulations.
